Step 4: Carat – Weight
As with all precious stones, the weight–and therefore the size–is expressed in carats.
One carat is divided into 100 “points” so that a diamond of 25 points is described as a quarter of a carat or 0.25 carats. A diamond with a carat weight of 0.50 carats, or 1/2 carat, will weigh twice as much as one with a weight of 0.25 carats. However, the 0.50 carat will not be twice as wide as the 0.25-carat diamond. A 0.50-carat diamond will measure approximately 5.2mm while the 0.25-carat diamond will measure approximately 4.1mm. Size is the most obvious factor in determining the value of a diamond, but now you know that two equal sizes can have very unequal prices depending on their quality. However, remember that diamonds of high quality can be found in all size ranges. Here are some other examples that show the approximate size of diamonds of varying carat weights.
